Bot Cadets
Curriculum Β· ages 8 to 12 Β· two tracks

What your child will be able to do

17 skills across four areas. Each one has a short check your child has to pass before moving on, so the dashboard shows what they can actually do, not just what they clicked through.

How AI works

25%

The intuition, not the vocabulary: AI learns patterns from examples, and a chatbot predicts the next word.

Using AI well

30%

Clear prompts, good follow-up questions, and using AI to learn instead of to skip learning.

Checking AI

25%

AI can sound sure and still be wrong. Kids learn the warning signs and how to check.

Safety and ethics

20%

Privacy, fake pictures and voices, fairness, and why a chatbot is not a friend.

Ages 8 to 10

Short, hands-on lessons

Every lesson is the same loop: Bit sets up one idea, your child does something that shows it (trains Bit, fixes its mistakes, plays detective), Bit names what happened, then a few questions that take real thinking. Bigger pictures and read-aloud throughout.

  1. Lesson 1

    How does AI learn?

AI learns from examples called training data.

  2. Lesson 2

Tell Bit exactly what you want

AI guesses anything you leave out, so clear details help.

  3. Lesson 3

    Keep your info private

Many AI apps save what you type, so keep personal info private.

  4. Lesson 4

    Is it real or AI-made?

Looks can fool you, so check the source.

  5. Lesson 5

    Checking what AI tells you

AI can be wrong and still sound sure, so check with a trusted source.

  6. Lesson 6

    When AI is unfair

If the examples leave some kids out, AI can be unfair to them.

  7. Lesson 7

AI is a tool, not a friend

AI can sound friendly, but it is a program. Real problems go to real people.

Ages 11 to 12

Seven units and a final project

  1. 1Unit 1

    What is AI?

β€œBuild a junk filter two ways: exact rules, or let it learn. Which wins?”

Kids build a junk-message filter from exact rules, then train a simple learner on examples. They see why learning beats rules, and how a new kind of scam still fools it.

    • Tell AI apart from regular programs
    • Explain how AI learns from examples
    • Know that AI is a tool, not alive
  2. 2Unit 2

    How AI learns

β€œTrain an AI to pick a basketball team. Then catch it being unfair.”

Kids train an AI on past team picks, audit it group by group, and find it copied an unfair pattern. Then they fix it by choosing better data.

    • Explain learning from examples
    • Check results for every group
    • Pick fairer training data
  3. 3Unit 3

    How chatbots talk

β€œBe the chatbot: write by picking the most likely next word. Then catch yourself writing something false.”

Kids build a tiny next-word predictor and write with it. The same method produces one true sentence and one confident false one, which is why chatbots can sound sure and still be wrong.

    • Explain next-word prediction
    • Separate sounding sure from being right
  4. 4Unit 4

    AI gets it wrong

β€œBit wrote your report in two seconds. It quotes a study. Is the study real?”

Kids fact-check an AI-written report: they learn the warning signs of made-up answers, check every claim in a trusted source (some mistakes have no warning signs), and fix what is wrong.

    • Spot warning signs of made-up answers
    • Check facts with trusted sources
    • Fix a wrong answer
  5. 5Unit 5

    Asking better questions

β€œYour quiz is tomorrow. Can you get the AI to actually help you practice?”

Kids build prompts from a goal, context, and format, and watch each part change the answer. Then they fix weak answers with specific follow-ups, and learn why "try again" does not help.

    • Write a prompt with goal, context, and format
    • Use specific follow-ups
    • Compare a weak prompt and a strong one
  6. 6Unit 6

    Safe and fair

β€œA voice message sounds exactly like Mom. Should you send the code?”

Kids learn the share check (is it private, could it be fake, is it fair?) and practice it on five real-life situations, including AI voice cloning, a fake video, and a filter that showed real AI bias.

    • Keep private info private
    • Spot AI-made voices, pictures, and videos
    • Explain how AI can be unfair
  7. 7Unit 7

    AI and you

β€œBit can do your homework in two seconds. What happens on quiz day?”

Kids choose between getting the answer and using AI as a tutor, face a no-AI quiz, and practice asking for hints instead of answers. Then an app calls itself their best friend, and they decide who to bring a real problem to.

    • Tell learning help from shortcuts
    • Use AI like a tutor
    • Explain why AI is not a friend
  8. β˜…Final project

Fix it and make it yours

β€œBit made a draft with a mistake hiding in it. Find it, fix it, then add your part.”

Kids fact-check and correct an AI-written draft, add their own original section, and write a short note on what the AI did and what they did.

    • Fact-check an AI draft
    • Add your own original work
    • Explain what AI did and what you did

Every skill, and how it’s checked

Your dashboard uses this same list, marking each skill when your child passes its check.
